Jagged Little Pill
--Jeff Bateman' border='0'>
- $10.69 new from $5.50 used from $0.16
Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines, but the bravest departure here is the way
Morissette's unique vocals stand naked in the mix--a technique that drives home the painful honesty
of tracks like "Right Through You," "Forgiven," and "All I Really Want." Sheryl Crow or an earthier
Tori Amos are fair analogies, but Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make
listeners care, think, and question. --Jeff Bateman

Thomas and the Magic Railroad
--Tammy La Gorce' border='0'>
- $7.99 new from $3.05 used from $0.47
Thomas, as anyone familiar with the eponymous, wildly popular TV series knows, is a very useful
engine, and never more so than in his first theatrical release, which was a modest box-office
success. On a tank filled with little more than pluck, determination, and goodwill, Thomas sets out
full steam ahead on a danger-fraught mission to help his friend Mr. Conductor. The conductor's stash
of magic gold dust has run out, leaving him stranded on the Island of Sodor with Junior, his flaky
cousin, and Lily, a little girl enlisted to lift her grandfather out of a funk on nearby Muffle
Mountain. When Thomas bravely chugs beyond his hometown tracks' buffers with Lily aboard, he's
transported to Muffle Mountain's secret railway and to Lady, a long-lost steamer whose legendary
engine makes her more powerful than Diesel, the train-yard bully. Together, Thomas and Lady lead
Diesel on a chase that causes a bridge to collapse, taking the dastardly Diesel down with it. Most
impressive about the movie is its marquee names: Alec Baldwin works magic as the dutiful worrywart
Mr. Conductor, Mara Wilson is Lily, and Peter Fonda plays the cool-looking but lugubrious Grandpa.
It's a cast that'll keep put-upon parents watching, if halfheartedly. Thomas fans 5 and under,
meanwhile, will wish the actors wouldn't blow so much hot air; they'll want to see their hero a
bigger part in steaming up the story line. --Tammy La Gorce

Portishead
--Jeff Bateman' border='0'>
- $11.68 new from $3.83 used from $1.85
The bad news is that there is no "Sour Times" to equal the first album's greatness. Lead single
"Cowboys" doesn't do the trick, not with its '50s sci-fi dub vibe and the Yma Sumac stylings of Beth
Gibbons. The upside is that this bold sophomore release is, even at this late date in trip-hop's
evolution, still startling, thanks to the mix of Geoff Barrow's soundscapes and Gibbons's haunting
wail. --Jeff Bateman show more

Frankenstein [VHS]
Frankenstein, one of the most famous and
influential horror movies ever made. Coming off the tremendous success of Dracula, Universal
assigned sophomore director Whale to helm an adaptation of Mary Shelley's famous novel with Bela
Lugosi as the monster. When Lugosi declined the role, Whale cast the largely unknown character actor
Boris Karloff and together with makeup designer Jack Pierce they created the most memorable monster
in movie history: a towering, lumbering creature with sunken eyes, a flat head, and a jagged scar
running down his forehead. Whale and Karloff made this mute, misunderstood brute, who has the brain
of a madman (the most obvious of the many liberties taken with Shelley's story), the most pitiable
freak of nature to stumble across the screen. Clive's Dr. Frankenstein is intense and twitchy and
Dwight Frye set the standard for mad-scientist sidekicks as the wild-eyed hunchback assistant.
Whale's later films, notably the spooky spoof The Old Dark House and the deliriously stylized
sequel The Bride of Frankenstein, display a surer cinematic hand than seen here and add a
subversive twist of black comedy, but given the restraints of early sound films, Whale breaks the
film free from static stillness and adorns it with striking design and expressionist flourishes.

"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the
hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" For
years unheard, this line has been restored, along with the legendary scene of the childlike monster
tossing a little girl into a lake, in James Whale's Frankenstein, one of the most famous and
influential horror movies ever made. Coming off the tremendous success of Dracula, Universal
assigned sophomore director Whale to helm an adaptation of Mary Shelley's famous novel with Bela

Return of the Dragon [VHS]
The Way of the Dragon, this film was renamed in the wake of
Enter the Dragon to cash in on that movie's popularity. --Sean Axmaker' border='0'>
- new from $4.88 used from $0.05
Bruce Lee wrote and directed Return of the Dragon, his third film, a mix of hard-edged kung
fu and goofy humor. Once again he plays the country boy who travels to a foreign land, in this case
Italy, where his restaurant-owning cousins face trouble from the local syndicate. Their strong-arm
tactics have driven customers away and now threaten the family, but Lee refuses to buckle under
their pressure and takes them on in a series of impressive confrontations. The film ends with a
memorable showdown with world-champion karate artist Chuck Norris in the Roman Colosseum (though
much of it is staged in a rather cheap studio set), a brutal, almost inhuman battle that revels in
the intense punishment taken by the combatants. Norris is one of Lee's best opponents and a
marvelous physical contrast: brawny and hairy, using power and blunt karate moves while lean, wiry
Lee counters with speed, gymnastic prowess, and balletic grace. The mix of comedy and kung fu comes
off as camp at times, but that's hardly the reason to see the film. When Lee gets into action,
whether he's taking on a gang of knife-wielding thugs or dueling Norris to the death, he becomes the
total focus. Originally titled The Way of the Dragon, this film was renamed in the wake of

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (+ BD-Live) [Blu-ray]
Harry
(Daniel Radcliffe) suspects Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) to be a new Death Eater recruit on a special
mission for the Dark Lord. In the meantime, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) seems to have
finally removed the shroud of secrecy from Harry about the dark path that lies ahead, and instead
provides private lessons to get him prepared. It's in these intriguing scenes that the dark past of
Tom Riddle (a.k.a. Voldemort) is finally revealed. The actors cast as the different young versions
of Riddle (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and Frank Dillane) do an eerily fantastic job of portraying the
villain as a child. While the previous movies' many new characters could be slightly overwhelming,
only one new key character is introduced this time: Professor Horace Slughorn (with a spot-on
performance by Jim Broadbent). Within his mind he holds a key secret in the battle to defeat the
Dark Lord, and Harry is tasked by Dumbledore to uncover a memory about Voldemort's darkest
weapon--the Horcrux. Despite the long list of distractions, Harry, Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione
(Emma Watson) still try to focus on being teenagers, and audiences will enjoy the budding awkward
romances. All of the actors have developed nicely, giving their most convincing performances to
date. More dramatic and significant things go down in this movie than any of its predecessors,
and the stakes are higher than ever. The creators have been tasked with a practically impossible
challenge, as fans of the beloved J.K. Rowling book series desperately want the movies to capture
the magic of the books as closely as possible. Alas, the point at which one accepts that these two
mediums are very different is the point at which one can truly enjoy these brilliant adaptations.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is no exception: it may be the best film yet. For
those who have not read the book, nail-biting entertainment is guaranteed. For those who have, the
movie does it justice. The key dramatic scenes, including the cave and the shocking twist in the
final chapter, are executed very well. It does a perfect job of setting up the two-part grand
finale that is to follow. --Jordan Thompson' border='0'>

The sixth installment of the Harry Potter series begins right where The Order of the
Phoenix left off. The wizarding world is rocked by the news that "He Who Must Not Be Named"
has truly returned, and the audience finally knows that Harry is "the Chosen One"--the only wizard
who can defeat Lord Voldemort in the end. Dark forces loom around every corner, and now regularly
attempt to penetrate the protected walls of Hogwarts School. This is no longer the fun and
fascinating world of magic from the first few books—it's dark, dangerous, and scary.

StarCraft Battle Chest
Not only does game maker Blizzard juggle the races' playability and match it with superb
art and sound effects, it also weaves together an engrossing three-act plot. Early on, as a Terran
magistrate, you spend a breathtaking 30 minutes defending against a Zerg onslaught. As the story
unfolds around you, you'll experience the Zerg's hive mentality and decipher the mysterious Protoss
by the game's dramatic conclusion. Missions vary in scope and are effectively framed with
dialogue, chapter screens, and in-mission exposition. Multiplayer games are also very well
represented by Blizzard's own free Battle.net service. If you'd rather play over a local area
network, StarCraft will generously "spawn" up to seven copies so your friends can join in.
In keeping with StarCraft's groundbreaking design, Brood War presents you with
three sides of a galactic conflict. Scheming humans, insidious Zerg, and proud Protoss collide
again, with stunning new cinematics setting the stage. Old friends and foes and ominous new arrivals
give the story a breakneck pace, while a handful of additions to each race's arsenal makes for tense
battles. Brood War also features stellar new environments and ambient art, as well as more
than 100 additional multiplayer maps. Some missions require a bit of finesse, breaking the
resource-gathering routine while making good use of the new units. Humans now have Valkyrie missile
frigates as well as medics who automatically try to heal your grunts. New for the Zerg air force is
the acid-spewing Devourer; the new Lurker unit provides heavy-duty (under)ground support. Along with
the Corsair fighter, the Protoss reenter the fray with Dark Templar, which can merge to form the
devastating Dark Archon. Unfortunately, units old and new still suffer from weak artificial
intelligence in path finding. Real-time strategy games don't get any more epic or any more
satisfying. --Jack Gardiner' border='0'>
- $19.09 new from $12.49 used from $9.89
The full versions of StarCraft and the acclaimed expansion pack Brood War, as well as
complete strategy guides for each, make StarCraft: Battle Chest a treasure chest for
real-time strategy fans. Instead of two similarly powered enemies facing off, the three distinct
races in StarCraft have unique capabilities and strategies. Everyone still competes in the
RTS genre's typical race for resources, but that's the only shared trait. Terrans can move their
bulky mechanized bases as necessary, while the reptilian Zerg grow their colonies and warriors from
mutating larvae. Meanwhile, the noble Protoss warp in equipment from their home world using psionic
powers. Not only does game maker Blizzard juggle the races' playability and match it with superb

space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the
player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the
game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player,
with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are
leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player
has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical
appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these
choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters
(NPCs), and character background. Accompanying this main character are a number of preset
supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will
alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in
Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional
new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races; a more realistic damage
system; a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage; a regenerative health system; a
dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard; and updates to the
dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs. Integration with the Original Mass
Effect Mass Effect 2 allows players of the original Mass Effect game to
import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. In doing this, the decisions
that were made in the first game will affect the events of the second game. In addition, characters
from the first game will return, as long as they were not killed off by the player in the first
game. On the other hand, new players coming to the series for the first time in Mass Effect 2
will start a brand-new character, discover the events of the previous games as they progress and
embark on a thrilling stand-alone adventure that does not require the previous game for play.
Key Features- Futuristic Weapons - Choose from 19 different weapons,
including devastating heavy weapons that can end a battle in seconds.
- Elite
Specialists - Recruit up to a dozen of the galaxy's most dangerous operatives to help you in
your mission. Train and equip your team to survive insurmountable odds.

Commander Shepard repelled invading Reapers bent on the destruction of organic life, a mysterious
new danger has emerged. On the fringes of known space, something is silently abducting entire human
colonies. Now Shepard must work with Cerberus, a ruthless organization devoted to human survival at
any cost, to stop the most terrifying threat mankind has ever faced. To even attempt this perilous
mission, Shepard must assemble the galaxy’s most elite team and command the most powerful ship
ever built. Even then, doubters say it would be suicide. Commander Shepard intends to prove them
wrong. The return of

space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the
player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the
game proceeds.
