Nelson stole home in the eighth inning to send the Colorado Rockies to a 6-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, completing a four-game series sweep and extending their winning streak to season-best seven games.
Giants win, pull within 1 game of Padres (AP)
With four mighty swings, the San Francisco Giants tamed Petco Park and trimmed the San Diego Padres' lead in the NL West to one game. Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey each hit a two-run homer and Pat Burrell and Juan Uribe also went yard as the Giants beat San Diego 7-3 Thursday night in the opener of a four-game showdown.
Wainwright wins 18th, Braves fall 1 back (AP)
The Braves were back at home, where they've been so dominating, and had a three-run lead on Adam Wainwright after the very first inning. It was all downhill from there for slumping Atlanta. Colby Rasmus hit a pair of homers, Albert Pujols and Skip Schumaker also connected, and Wainwright bounced back from a shaky start to lead the Cardinals past the Braves 11-4 on Thursday night.
Pettitte goes 4 innings in rehab start (AP)
New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte pitched four shutout innings in a minor league rehab start Thursday night and said it felt good to be back on the mound. Pettitte allowed two hits and struck out four in Double-A Trenton's Eastern League playoff game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Tigers deal ChiSox third straight loss (AP)
Their goal of winning the AL Central all but gone, the Detroit Tigers are embracing their role as spoilers. Johnny Damon had a season-high four hits, scored two runs and drove in one, helping Detroit beat Chicago 6-3 Thursday and hand the White Sox their third straight loss. The Tigers have won six of eight to get back above .500 for the first time since July 31.
Phils' Polanco playing with broken elbow (AP)
Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco is playing with a small break in his left elbow, but is postponing surgery until after the season because Philadelphia is in a pennant race. Polanco is batting .308 with six homers and 47 RBIs for the surging Phillies, who lead the NL East by a game over the Atlanta Braves.
Rangers' Lewis gets first win since July (AP)
Colby Lewis is headed home -- without his long winless stretch. Lewis matched his career high in victories by winning for the first time since mid-July, Mitch Moreland drove in a career-high three runs and the Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Thursday night. "The day belonged to Colby Lewis," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.
Police get Clemens documents from Jays (AP)
Police searched the offices of the Toronto Blue Jays and turned over documents in connection with the perjury case against seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens. Two officers executed the search in June and assisted the U.S. Justice Department by forwarding the two boxes they obtained, police spokesman Const.
Joyce behind plate for Galarraga's start (AP)
Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga is ho-hum about being on the mound for the first time with umpire Jim Joyce since their infamous moment together. "It will be no big deal," Galarraga said Thursday morning. Galarraga is the probable pitcher and Joyce is scheduled to be behind the plate Friday night when Detroit hosts Baltimore.
Phillies back in familiar spot in 1st (AP)
Charlie Manuel scoffed every time someone mentioned the Philadelphia Phillies and wild card in the same breath. When others thought the Phillies may have to settle for a wild-card spot this season, their skipper never wavered. He insisted his team would never concede the division until it ran out of games.
