In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa
Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the
Beatles' newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even
though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they
returned to the club for a two-week co-headlining run in 1971 their lives were somewhat different.
That summer Taylor's "Fire and Rain" was topping the charts and King's landmark Tapestry was on its
way to making her a music superstar. Thirty-six years later, in November 2007, James Taylor, Carole
King and members of their renowned original band "The Section" (featuring guitarist Danny Kortchmar,
bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour for a three-night,
six-show run to celebrate the venue's 50th anniversary. Those historic shows are documented in

Actually, plenty in this dark but beautifully realized adaptation of Peter Matthiessen's
well-regarded novel, directed by Hector Babenco. Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kathy Bates, and John
Lithgow play the Americans who travel to the Brazilian interior in an effort to do some good. But
their definitions of good vary wildly; Bates and Lithgow are old-fashioned puritans who want to
convert the heathens to Christianity and remove all traces of their own culture. Quinn and Hannah
are more spiritually minded, hoping to make a connection and a cultural exchange with the Indians
they encounter. In the end, they're all delusional, trapped in their own preconceptions. Downbeat
but magical in its way, with sterling performances all around and amazing scenery, to say the least.

movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone
with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called
the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds
routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some
well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a
